1. Bovine, Texas Marker
Bovine was settled in the middle 1800's as a trading post. A post office, receiving mail tri-weekly, was established at this site in 1875 with T.Y. Plume, Postmaster. He was also Justice of the Peace. This small settlement had four general stores along with two gristmills, a cotton gin, a steam sawmill, a church and a school. Thousands of longhorn cattle were gathered here to be driven up what was commonly known as the Chisholm Trail to Kansas, Nebraska, the Dakotas, Wyoming and other destinations. The demise of Bovine began with the arrival of the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad (SA & APRR) in 1887. There was no longer a need for trail drivers. The small town was swallowed by the new railroad town of Yoakum, named after the builder of the rail road, B.F. Yoakum.
This marker is dedicated in memory of R.W. and Hilda Schmidt Dagg through the generosity of Don and Velma Rice.
