Dyess Park was named for Lt. Col. A. James Dyess U.S.M.C.R. of Augusta, Georgia, who was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for distinguished gallantry beyond the call of duty and intrepidity in the leadership of his command, First Battalion, Twenty-Fourth Marines, in the assault on Namur Island, Kwajalain Atoll, Marshall Islands against Japanese forces on the second day of February, 1944....
