The first 5-mila (50-km cross-country ski) race in the world started from this place on February 7, 1888. Skiforeningen (“The Ski Association”) was the organizer, 17 participated and 12 completed two laps of a 25 km long course. Included as an event in the first Olympic Winter Games in 1924.

… Before the very first 5,000m in Holmenkollen started, several runners had smoked pipes to expand their lungs. 32 participants were registered, 17 showed up to start. Torjus Hemmestveit from Telemark won with a time of 4:26.30 and the prize was 400 kroner. The doctors thought that the 5,000m was harmful to health, and a forced break was introduced halfway through. At the next race, 14 years after the first, twelve doctors were present. Food knowledge was also different; in the early days, the athletes ate heavy food before and during the race. In the interwar period, it was popular to eat cutlets along the way. In 1933, neither Finns nor Swedes dared to eat or drink at the Norwegian food stations for fear
