1. Olympia Cotton Mills Marker

Inscription.
Incorporated in 1899 and completed in 1901, Olympia Cotton Mills was called "the largest cotton mill under one roof in the world." Its 104,000 spindles and 2,600 looms operated using coal-fired electric power, a technological innovation by owner and architect-engineer W.B. Smith Whaley. The mill which initially employed 1,200 workers, was "peerless" in both its size and the quality of its mill village and amenities.
