1. A Powerful Garden Marker
Inscription.
Throughout its history, the estate's garden was an extension of wealth and power of its white owners. Privilege and race defined who enjoyed this space and who maintained it. For some it was a living stage of beauty and environment. For others it was a place of hard labor, often battling heat, bugs and weeds in a maze of pathways, towering trees, bushes and vines.

[Caption:]
Country Life in America magazine highlighted the estate's grounds in January 1910. At that time, administrators for the college for Women often promoted their campus's safety and beautiful garden.
