We proudly dedicate this plaque and tree (planted July 2, 1981) in rememberance of all the living and deceased members of the 726th searchlight battery and as an expression of our affection for the warm and loving people of Maui who welcomed us.
The 726th searchlight battery was formerly Battery "A" of the 369th Coast Artillery Anti-Aircraft Regiment of New York City, comprised primarily of officers and enlisted men of Afro-American heritage or descent.
The regiment was reorganized after reaching the Hawaiian Islands in June of 1942 and Battery "A" was redesignated the 726th Searchlight Battery.
The military duty here in Maui was just a portion of the contribution in the fight to preserve democracy for all citizens of these United States.
The 726th Searchlight Battery guarded the island of Maui during WWII from August 1942 through August 1945.
