Regarding Ever-Blooming Night and Day Flowers, 1982. This James Seawright artworkits LED functionality, as best as can be determined, apparently out of use for many yearsis the last vestige of Cermak Plaza's one-time status as an iconic modern-art hub. Throughout the shopping center, located at the southwest corner of Harlem Avenue and Cermak Road (22nd Street), were unique modern art pieces that, based on archival photo evidence, described by blue signs similar to the one next to "Ever-Blooming Night and Day Flowers."
Among the many works at Cermak Plaza, the most famous was the "Spindle," a 50-foot spear impaling eight old cars that made a cameo appearance in the movie "Wayne's World." The Spindle was removed in 2008 after many years of deterioration, replaced a year later by a new Walgreens; the other works were removed due either to similar decay, or during renovations of the shopping center. However, this Seawright piece and its accompanying blue sign remain in place next to Marshalls.
