1. Uncle Doug’s Place Marker

Inscription.
Uncle Doug's Place was located in the African American section of Wimauma known as Bethune, which was sometimes called Bethune slums. The store was a vital outlet for the community's Black residents who could not shop at the white-owned stores or eat at the white-owned restaurants during the era of segregation. Uncle Doug's Place was a hangout for the African American teenagers and young adults who lived in Bethune and the other nearby Black neighborhood known as Teaspoon. They enjoyed old movies that the owner showed on an improvised screen in an area behind the store. The store owner would also play music and provide space for dances. Uncle Doug's Place was one of the few hangouts for young people in the area and was seen as a safe space for them to go.
