The Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art is the largest and oldest art gallery on Staten Island, featuring major solo and group exhibitions that include a mix of local and international work.

Also called the Main Hall and John J. Marchi Exhibition Hall, its landmarked Building C wing was the historic cornerstone of Snug Harobr and the first building constructed on campus. The Building G wing is also home to the Dance Center at Snug Harbor.

In addition to dynamic art exhibitions and performances, the Newhouse Center interior is itself a work of art. Keep an eye out for motifs that you think would help the sailors feel a sense of familiarity and calm, like the intricate mural on the ceiling full of nautical imagery like rope patterns, anchors, and sail rigging. Brilliant stained glass pieces, which many believe to be made by Tiffany Studios, decorate the doorways with seafaring scenes and constellations. Floorboards are arranged in star-like compass shapes, and the weathervane on the roof makes soothing sounds like creaking pulleys and a ship rocking at sea that would lull the sailors to sleep.

Erected by Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden; Newhosue Center for Contemporary Art at Snug Harbor; NYC & Company foundation.
