Mid Island on Staten Island in Richmond County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Veteran's Memorial Hall
New York City Landmark
Completed: 1856
Architect: James Salmon
The Veteran's Memorial Hall—historically known as the Chapel—was originally built without a tower and used to sit 200 feet away, where the Great Hall is now located. The Greek Revival style building was completed when all Sailors' Snug Harbor residents were mandated to attend religious services. The current three-stage tower with belfry was constructed in 1883 by Snug Harbor's head carpenter, Richard Smyth.
In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, it was rededicated as the Veteran's Memorial Hall (VMH) in memory of 828 Staten Islanders who were lost when serving in World Wars I and II, Korea and Vietnam. The VMH hosted performances, lectures, films, and other events, until it was temporarily closed due to the need for renovation.
Erected by Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden; NYC & Company Foundation.
