…Jakob Schönberg earned his living as a pianist, music critic for the Nürnberger Zeitung, conductor, and composer. His first orchestral work, "Prelude Symphonique," premiered in 1923. Bavarian Radio in Munich, for which he worked as a musical advisor, performed several of his orchestral compositions. He also wrote film music, some of which was published by Schott's Söhne (Mainz) and Hawkes & Son (London).(Submitted on February 11, 2026.)
After the Nazi Party seized power in 1933, Jakob Schönberg lost his jobs at the Nürnberger Zeitungand Bavarian Radio. In Berlin, he became music critic for the Jüdische Rundschau and increasingly focused on Jewish musical folklore in Palestine, which is also reflected in his compositions. In 1935, he published an anthology of 230 Hebrew songs, "Shirei Eretz Israel" ("Songs from the Land of Israel"). The three-movement "Chassidic Suite" (originally for piano, later arranged for orchestra) was performed several times in its orchestral version between 1936 and 1938 by the Jewish Cultural Associations in Berlin and Frankfurt am Main.Photographed by Andrew Ruppenstein, February 6, 20262. In 1939, Jakob Schoenberg emigrated to England. Little is known about his years in England. Apparently, he composed no further works after leaving Germany. In 1948, he moved to New York City, where, in the same year, pianist Ray Lev performed a movement from the "Chassidic Suite" at Carnegie Hall. Jakob Schoenberg taught at Trinity School in New York and later at the Carnegie School of Music in Englewood, New Jersey. On May 1, 1956, Jakob Schoenberg died of a brain tumor in New York City.
