1. Hallet's Cabin Marker
Inscription.
In 1833, John and Margaret Hallet came from Goliad and built their first log cabin on their league of land located on the east side of the Lavaca River. At the end of 1833 or the beginning of 1834, the Hallets returned to Goliad where John Hallet died on January 29, 1834.
In 1836 or 1837, Margaret Hallet and her daughter, Mary Jane, returned to the cabin on the Lavaca and found it had been destroyed by the Mexican army during the Texas Revolution. Margaret Hallet built her second log cabin on the north most position of the Hallet League. After Margaret's death in 1863, John Buchanan, IV and his wife became owners of the cabin and in an expansion the cabin became a part of the bedroom section of the Buchanan's two-story twenty room residence. After John Buchanan's death in 1919, the home passed to his daughter Hope and her husband Dave Finkelstein.
In 1933, fire completely destroyed the Finkelstein home including the furniture, silverware, chinaware, linen, and four rare oil paintings. After the fire, the Finkeisteins built a new residence on the same location and today it is the home of the Hallettsville Garden Club.
