Hallettsville in Lavaca County, Texas — The American South (West South Central)
Hallet League
One of the first settlers in the area was John Hallet, who received a land grant from Stephen F. Austin in 1831. Hallet's grant was located on the east bank of the Lavaca River, the westernmost boundary of Austin's colony. Hallet's grant was bounded on the north by the Presnal League and on the south by the Smothers League.
After John Hallet's death in 1834, The Hallet League was partitioned by probate court in February, 1848, the north 1/2 going to Margaret Hallet and south 1/2 to Mary Jane Hallet Ballard.
The town of Hallettsville was named for his widow Margaret, who gave the land for the town site when Hallettsville became county seat in 1852.
