(27 July 1909 in Cologne – 22 February 2006 in Heidelberg)
from 5 September 1931 to 30 July 1932.
The rise of National Socialism and increasing antisemitism in Heidelberg led the young student in 1932, together with her future husband Erwin Walter Palm, to begin studies abroad in Italy.
With Hitler’s rise to power, this became her first exile. Via England and Canada, they fled to Santo Domingo and did not return to Germany until 1954. Hilde Domin became famous as a poet.
“I named myself, I called myself, by the name of an island.”
In 1961 the couple settled permanently in Heidelberg. In 2004, Hilde Domin was granted honorary citizenship. She is buried with her husband in an honorary grave at the Heidelberg Bergfriedhof cemetery.
