Palacios in Matagorda County, Texas — The American South (West South Central)
Then Along Came the Luthers!
| | Hotel Fence Wrap Exhibit Walk | |
The Hotel was purchased by Charles and Elsie Luther in 1936. They undertook a major renovation, including a reconfiguration of the rooms to accommodate military families of soldiers stationed at nearby Camp Hulen. They removed the longest porch and kitchen, dining room and ballroom. A new two-story, central porch added a real sense of grandeur to the building.
The community had regarded the hotel as an eyesore, but the Luthers were undaunted and set out to meet all 175 requirements of the National Hotel Association. They did it! The building was reopened on April 20, 1941, on the Luthers' 20th wedding anniversary!
