The Medal or Honor is the highest military award for bravery given to an individual serving the United States Armed Forces. President Abraham Lincoln approved the Navy Medal of Honor on December 21, 1861. On July 12, 1862, the Army Medal of Honor was created and Congress established the Air Force Medal of Honor July 6, 1960. The first Army medals were awarded on March 25, 1863. On April 3, 1863, the first Navy Medals were awarded to Sailors and Marines. The first Air Force medal was awarded on January 19, 1967. The list below honors these individuals, associated with the State of Minnesota, whose brave actions were deserving of this highest honor. This plaque serves as a permanent marker to honor those who have shown great bravery in defense of our country.
