2. The Founding of the Red Cross in Fürth Marker - wide view
Establishment of the Medical Corps 1866–1913: On June 28, 1866, a women's committee for the care of the wounded was once again formed in Fürth. Among the signatories were names of well-known Fürth families, including Arnstein, Berolzheimer, Hätzner, von Haller, Humbser, Lehmus, Ley, Münch, Segitz, Wollner, and Zäh. Shortly thereafter, on July 7, 1866, a newspaper announcement revealed that a men's association, responsible for supporting the wounded and establishing a field hospital, had also been formed.(Submitted on February 22, 2026.)
In the same year, Pastor Friedrich Lehmus registered a branch of the Field Deaconess Association with the Fürth city council. Deacons were trained to be sent to the front to care for the wounded. With these first paramedics, Pastor Lehmus, who was also a model of social progress in other areas, was among the Fürth figures who actively championed the Red Cross ideal.
Just a few months after King Ludwig II had ordered the establishment of a Bavarian Disabled Persons' Support Association, the Fürth Disabled Persons' Support Association was founded on February 14, 1867, at 8:00 p.m. in the Hotel Kütt. Again at the suggestion of Queen Mother Marie of Bavaria, the Fürth Red Cross Women's Association was founded on July 23, 1870. It was supported by the Fürth Medical Association. By Christmas 1870, 138 soldiers' wives and their 208 children had already received gifts. Seventy wounded soldiers were housed in the Fürth gymnasium.
