Scheffels Dichtung begeisterte Generationen von Studierenden. 1852 schrieb er das Lied: „Alt Heidelberg, du feine, Du Stadt an Ehren reich, Am Neckar und am Rheine kein' andre kommt dir gleich."
Here lived from 1844 to 1847, during his student years, Joseph Victor von Scheffel (1826–1886). Scheffel’s poetry inspired generations of students. In 1852 he wrote the song: “Old Heidelberg, so fair, City rich in honor, On the Neckar and the Rhine, No other can compare.”

He was born at Karlsruhe. His father, a retired major in the Baden army, was a civil engineer and member of the commission for regulating the course of the Rhine; his mother, née Josephine Krederer, the daughter of a prosperous tradesman at Oberndorf am Neckar, was a woman of great intellectual powers and of a romantic disposition.
