Logging
Great Lakes States 1890
Railroads devoured woodfor bridges, cars, fuel and cross-ties. They also carried lumber to growing markets nation-wide. Thousands of people worked in the logging business, which cut vast acres of northern forests in just 50 years.
Rivers To Rails
In the first decades of logging, cut trees were floated downstream to be sold. Before long, the forests near rivers and lakes were gone. Railroads helped the logging industry expand into more isolated regions. Trains could carry logs anywhere and at any time of year.
This map shows the logging railroads in a 25-mile square of northern Wisconsin between 1887 and 1930. Railroad companies built special spur lines off their main lines into remote forests. When those trees were gone, the tracks could be literally picked up and moved to another region.
Can you follow a log's journey from the forest to the saw mill to the city?
