A sister ship of the X-1, first aircraft to exceed the speed of sound. This ship is the second of three X-1 aircraft and was flight tested in 1946. After extensive modification of wings, canopy, and fuel system, it was redesignated X-1E. First flown as the X-1E in Dec. 1955, the rocket powered aircraft completed 26 flights, achieving a maximum speed of 1,500 M.P.H. and an altitude of 90,000 feet.
