The Old Bathhouse
Schnaittach Historical Trail
Stich: Der Bader
The existence of a bathhouse is first documented in the year 1368. It was located in the Fröschau near the stream from which the necessary water was drawn, at the property Birkensteingasse 1. In the bathhouse, the people of Schnaittach could bathe regularly; the barber-surgeon provided hair care, applied cupping glasses, treated ulcers and skin diseases, and eventually became the town’s wound surgeon. Characteristic of this bathhouse is that its owners experienced social advancement in the 18th century. At that time the proprietors were members of the Gräf family of bathers, one of whom, still working as a bather and wound surgeon, sent his son to university. Dr. Andreas Gräf became a respected physician with a “practice of the most extensive scope.”
