...in 1945, [Edwin J.] Dingle approached Frank Lloyd Wright Sr. to build what he called "The City of Joy," Jennings said.(Submitted on March 1, 2026, by Tatiana Zavala of Orange County, California.)
"A place where it would be off the grid, where they would grow their own foods and where professionals musicians and artists and craftsmen and builders who were now in their later years" could live, she said.
While it is believed that Frank Lloyd Wright had a hand in the design of some of the structures, his son, Lloyd Wright, is the architect of record.
According to "Lloyd Wright: The Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright Jr." by Alan Weintraub, a brochure announced the appointment of Lloyd Wright as architect and engineer, identifying him as the son of the designer of the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo and stating that Frank Lloyd Wright would be advising on the commission:
'Moved by a sense of the tranquil nobility and eternal beauty of the desert, I have planned, not a city of asphalt paving and steel or of tight mechanical grid and congested living barracks, but a city of the Desert spacious, free sweeping ... its centuries-old Joshua Trees standing like sentinels about its homes.'"
