More about this memorial. The memorial was created to recognize those Marine Corps lieutenants who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation, the Marine Corps, and their fellow Marines. The sculptor is Mr. John Phelps, whose son, Marine Lance Cpl. Chance Phelps was killed in action in April 2004. The likeness of the lieutenant sculpted in bronze is of First Lieutenant Shaun Blue, who was killed during combat in Iraq on April 16, 2007. The statue was a gift from Lieutenant Blue's father, Mr. Jim Blue.
Also see . . . Of Bronze and Blue. "The sculpture at the centerpiece of the memorial represents a generation of young men who served after the attacks of September 11, 2001. For these men, the stakes of war were never theoretical. They knew they would be going into harms
way. They knew the risks. They volunteered to serve." (Submitted on March 1, 2026, by Kevin W. of Stafford, Virginia.)
