Shullsburg in Lafayette County, Wisconsin — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
The School District of Shullsburg
This site is the location of the first Lafayette County courthouse, built in 1855. The county seat was later moved in 1861, and the building was converted to a free public school-an important advancement for early education in the area. In March 1900, it burned down under odd circumstance. However, it was quickly rebuilt the same year.
This three-story, symmetrical building was cut from native limestone and designed by the town physician, Dr. C.C. Gratiot, and has Romanesque features, hipped roofs, and a triple-arched entrance. The gymnasium addition was built by the federal Works Progress Administration in 1941, following the completion of their work at Badger Park. Other additions were made in 1955, 1974, and 1996. Care was taken in each instance to preserve the integrity of the original building.
Today it stands as a great source of pride for the community and its many generations of alumni. It is among the oldest active schools in Wisconsin.
Erected by Lions Club of Schullsburg.
