Queen City
Queen City was an active Black neighborhood in this area for 50 years. The neighborhood was created in 1892 when nearby land was purchased for housing lots and a church, eventually renamed Mount Olive Baptist, early residents and congregants had lived at Freedman's Village, a settlement of formerly enslaved people who were evicted by the federal government later used for Arlington National Cemetery. During World War II, the federal government evicted residents and demolished Queen City to provide road access to the Pentagon. For years, residents lived in federal trailers that lacked running water and electricity. Many later relocated to Black communities elsewhere in Arlington.
