Inscription.
In 1792, the Vermont Legislature ensured Middlebury’s future prominence by choosing it as the site for Addison County courts. Three courthouses have been built in this area. The original clapboard courthouse shown on the right in the photograph, was located on land that is now part of Court Square, the traffic circle to your left. Known for being exceptionally cold in winter, the old courthouse was moved south on Route 7 where it survived as a harness shop and county fair exhibit hall until its demolition in 1939. It was replaced by the stately brick Queen Anne-style turreted building in front of you, designed by the talented local architect Clinton Smith. Through the terms of the original land bequest, this building reverted to Middlebury Courthouse when the current county courthouse was built behind it in 1995.

Erected by Town of Middlebury, Lake Champlain Byway, Federal Highway Administration. A significant historical year for this entry is 1792.
