Robert Bolling, Jr.. The Town of Whitehall properties were originally purchased by the Welfare Foundation in 1984. The Foundation was formed in 1930 by Pierre S. du Pont and is headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware. The mission of the organization is to promote the social welfare of people and communities across the State of Delaware and in Southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. Chaired by Mr. Robert Bolling, Jr., at that time, the Foundation acquired the Whitehall property from the local utility company who had contemplated building a nuclear power plant on the site. In keeping with the Foundation's vision, Mr. Bolling sought to create a plan for the land that would establish a new sense of community and have a beneficial impact for future generations. Under the leadership of Mr. Bolling, and in the spirit of Pierre S. du Pont, the Welfare Foundation donated the property that is now the St. Georges Technical High School. Later, in conjunction with Eastern States Development Group and EDIS Company, a similar land gift would be made by the Foundation to establish Lorewood Grove Elementary, along with significant financial investments to help establish what is now Mapleton Village.
Mr. Bolling served in the United States Navy during world war two, graduated from Princeton University as an electrical engineer, and was an avid outdoorsman.
