1. World War II Civilians Marker
Inscription.

This plaque memorializes the valiant service of thousands of men and women who served as civilians during World War II supporting the war effort. Often this service was at great risk to personal safety and in the face of the enemy. Over 8,000 members of the United States Merchant Marine lost their lives during this service, as did many others recognized today.

Many years after the end of the war, Congress recognized these brave people and bestowed upon them the status of veteran. Public Law 95-202 has granted veteran status upon the following groups for their participation during the world wars:

• United States Merchant Marine
• Women's Airforce Services Pilots (WASPS)
• Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC)
• Signal Corps female telephone operators units
• World War I reconstruction aides and dietitians
• Engineer field clerks
• Civilian employees who defended Wake Island
• Female clerical employees of the American Expeditionary Forces
• Male civilian ferry pilots
• Wake Island defenders from Guam
• Guam Combat Patrol
• Quartermaster Corps Keswick Crew on Corregidor
• Volunteers in the defense of Bataan
• Civilian U.S. Navy IFF technicians in the combat areas of the Pacific
• Civilians of the American Field Service overseas (WWI and WWII)
