Inscription.
In 1913, faculty, staff, and local citizens associated with Talladega College founded the first NAACP unit in Alabama. Talladega College graduate William Pickens influenced the founding. Pickens enrolled at Talladega, College in 1898, graduated four years later, and was named the college's most illustrious graduate. He later returned to Talladega College as a professor of foreign languages. He eventually held positions as Field Secretary and Field Director for the NAACP. This marker stands in front of Seymour Hall where Pickens served as a distinguished professor. It was erected under the leadership of Rev. Hugh Morris, President of the Talladega County Branch of the NAACP, and Benard Simelton, President of the Alabama State Conference. By action of the Alabama State Conference of the NAACP on November 13, 2019, this marker was unanimously approved for installation on the campus of Talladega College
