1. Century Apartments Marker
Inscription.
One of four twin-tower apartment buildings that distinguish the central park west skyline, the 30-story Century Apartments was designed in the Art Deco style by Jacques L. Delamarre Sr. and Irwin S. Chanin of the Chanin Organization, who built it in 1930-31 on the site of the 1909 Century theatre. Cantilevered floor slabs permit column-free corners with sun-filled "Solaria" and the twin towers feature machine-age concrete fins. Notable residents have included the boxer Jack Dempsey; the composer George Gershwin and his brother, the lyricist Ira Gershwin; the singer Ethel Merman; restaurateur Leo "Lindy" Linderman; and the theatrical impresario Lee Shubert. The Century was designated a landmark in 1985 and became a condominium in 1989.
