This Angelus Bell represents a tangible link between the "old" and the "new" Manhattan College.
Cast in 1854, the year in which the Immaculate Conception was declared an Article of Faith, the bell was originally installed at the College when it was known as the Academy of the Holy Infancy and located at 131st Street and Broadway, in the Manhattanville section of Manhattan. Even there, however, the bell calling those to daily prayer went silent when the Church of the Annunciation, which was erected on the corner of the College's grounds, installed a similar Angelus bell. When Manhattan College moved to its present site in Riverdale in 1923, the bell was also relocated but stored in an attic until 1936, when the devotional practice was revived. During the summer of 1936, at the suggestion of Brother Angelus Gabriel, FSC, and the financial assistance of Alpha Sigma Beta fraternity, the bell was installed on the right clerestory of the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers. The Angelus began tolling morning, noon and night, calling all to prayerful silence. During the renovation of the chapel in the late 1940s, a new bell was installed in the belfry, and this Angelus Bell was permanently silenced.
