1. Van Gogh Walk (SW9) Marker
In May 1873, Vincent van Gogh arrived in London to work as an art dealer and found lodgings nearby at 87 Hackford Road. Vincent wrote to his brother Theo about his early days in Stockwell:
"Oh, how I'd like to have you here, old chap, to see my new lodgings, which you'll have heard about. I walk here as much as I can. It's absolutely beautiful even though it's in the city. There are lilacs and hawthorns and laburnums blossoming in all the gardens, and the chestnut trees are magnificent. If one truly loves nature one finds beauty everywhere.
"Things are going well for me here. I have a wonderful home and it's a great pleasure for me to observe London, and the English way of life and the English themselves, and I also have nature and art and poetry, and if that isn't enough, what is?"
In April 1874, Vincent brought his younger sister Anna to London and she also moved in to Hackford Road.
