Johnson City in Washington County, Tennessee — The American South (East South Central)
The Ell
The ell or back portion of the Tipton-Haynes home was built sometime in the late 1840s to early 1850s by Landon and Eleanor Haynes. This addition replaced a detached Tipton built kitchen. A 2008 archaeological dig between the house and law office uncovered the former detached kitchen's fireplace hearth. Artifacts found included eggshells, animal bones, pottery, and dining utensils that dated to the early to mid-1800s.
The ell addition was built in two stages after the Haynes family dismantled the former Tipton detached kitchen.
An attached kitchen was built first, but was shortly transformed into the family dining room. They extended the ell by building another attached kitchen onto the dining room. A seam running between the two rooms on the outside clapboard siding is visible evidence of the two-stage construction. The original pine floors of this section of the home remain. In the 1900s, the Simerly brothers, Lawson and Samuel, used the Haynes dining room as their bedroom. They also transformed the kitchen when they installed a coal/wood burning stove.
[Captions:]
Restoration to the ell porch and dining room chimney is visible in this 1960s photograph.
The Simmerly brothers' coal/wooding stove is visible in this 1960s photograph. The stove was removed during the 1965-1969 restoration of the site and the blacking spot was painted over.
This photograph of Landon and Eleanor Haynes was taken after the Civil War in Memphis, Tennessee.
