1. Meeting House of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) 1810 Marker
In 1800 an extensive grant of land in this vicinity was made to Timothy Rogers and Samuel Lundy who, with other members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), settled here in 1801-1803. Originally under the religious jurisdiction of the Philadelphia and New York Yearly Meetings, the settlers were organized in 1806 as the Yonge Street Monthly Meeting of Friends. In 1807 Asa Rogers deeded two acres of land for a burial ground and three years later William Doan made a similar grant for a meeting house. This simple frame building, begun in 1810, was the first permanent place of worship to be erected in the area north of Toronto. The Society of Friends still continues to worship here.
En 1800, de vastes terres sont octroyées & Timothy Rogers et Samuel Lundy. Avec d'autres membres de la Société Religieuse des Amis (Quakers), ils s’établissent dans la region entre 1801 et 1803. D'abord rattaches aux Assemblées annuelles de Philadelphie et de New York, ces pionniers fondent en 1806 L’Assemblée mensuelle de la rue Yonge. En 1807, Asa Rogers fait don de deux acres de terre pour y créer un cimetière et en 1810, William Doan donne un autre terrain pour qu'on y érige une maison de réunion quaker. Ce simple bâtiment en bots, commence la même année, est le premier édifice religieux permanent à avoir été construit au nord de Toronto et les membres de la Société des Amis s’y réunissent toujours.
