As they have done on Memorial Day for the past 17 years, Patti and Scott Holmes will make their way to the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center on Monday.

They always bring fresh flowers and a small American flag to place before the white marble headstone that bears their son’s name. They settle onto a nearby stone bench, next to a cluster of soon-to-blossom crabapple trees. Across the way, two barn silos rise out of lush green fields. Distant rolling hills add to the view’s serenity.
