1. Michigan Town Marker
Inscription. In the early 1920s, Frederick VanRoy, a successful Crystal River businessman, encouraged residents from his home state of Michigan to spend their winters in the growing town where he settled over a decade before.

Most of the early residents were from Redford, a suburb of Detroit, and were probably acquainted with each other before coming to Florida. They came and bought small lots in the area of NE 2nd and NE 3rd Streets.

By 1924, he had gotten enough people to build homes that a neighborhood began to form and was coined "Michigan Town". The low stone walls in front of some homes and the use of limestone in porch bases are signature aspects of the neighborhood.

About twenty of the original cottages and houses still exist while others have been replaced by more modern structures. Some of the original homes have also changed with remodeling over the years.

Erected by City of Crystal River.
