1. Ears to the Sea, Eyes on the Weather Marker
A few steps down this trail you will discover a small structure that was part of a vast coastal defense system embedded into Point Loma
Built by the United States Army in 1918, the radio station helped to defend the San Diego Harbor during World War II. Three-man teams operated around the clock, communicating with ships entering the channel.
During World War II, soldiers used the building as a meteorological station to support coastal artillery. They recorded wind, air density, and other conditions that affect gunfire. They telephoned this data to nearby artillery officers, helping to improve the range and accuracy of the batteries of guns.
Today the building houses a permanent exhibit about San Diego's harbor defenses during World War II.
