Inscription.
Ships in the earliest periods in the nation's naval history flew a variety of flags. Today's Navy flag was authorized April 24, 1959, and represents the Navy's operational forces at sea. The Navy seal serves as the main feature. Unlike other flags and pennants which fly from graff, mast, or staff on board naval vessels, the flag of the U.S. Navy is reserved for display purposes and carried by honor guards at ceremonial events.
