Inscription. In the 1890s, Edward Dilworth Latta (1851-1925) and his associates at the Charlotte Consolidated Construction Company planned the layout and construction of the Dilworth neighborhood. The Mayer House is a beautiful example of the Victorian-style housing that characterized this neighborhood in the early 1900's. Charlottean Robert Andrew Mayer (1875-1969) built this house in 1908. In the 1930's, it served as a boardinghouse. In 1937, novelist Carson McCullers wrote the opening chapters of her first novel, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, while residing here.
