Manhattan in New York County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
1000 Park Avenue
This Gothic Revival apartment house, completed in 1916, was designed by architect Emery Roth for developers Alexander and Leo Bing. The granite brick and terra cotta facades are a study in medieval motifs ranging from heraldic shields, cinquefoils and blind lancets to the gothic font indicating the building's address. Heavily foliated water tables are punctuated by terra cotta squirrels and owls, symbols of resourcefulness and wisdom. Cross-legged minions appear to support the 12th floor balconies while grotesques at the 3rd floor clutch representations if ecclesiastical edifices, one nearby being the nearby Park Avenue Christian Church , formerly the South Dutch Reformed Church. Developers Bing and Bing, who regularly collaborated with Roth, are said to be the inspiration for the two figures clad in medieval garb, flanking the front entrance.
1000 Park Avenue is part of the Park Avenue Historic District, designated by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2014.
Erected 2014 by Landmarks Preservation Commission.
