1. Central Market Marker
Inscription.
The Central Market was located in this area from June, 1850 through June, 1966. On property purchased from Thomas and Sarah Asbury. Constructed of brick and limestone. The original building was 388' long and 37' wide. Produce and other shops were on the first floor while the City Hall, Council Chamber, and other offices occupied the second. Estimated cost for the entire original building is $15,148 not including the 1200 lb. bell which was a part of the structure until 1927.
