The Orchard
Teaching Garden
| | Circa 1832-1900 | |
Like all backyards in Alta California, the rear of the Cooper family house was devoted to practicality. Penned animals, a vegetable garden and outbuildings were a likely sight. However, horticulture books on growing stone fruits can be found in the Cooper library. Family accounts record shipments of cherry trees as early as 1846. On-site archaeological investigations uncovered peach pits. All are indicators that the Coopers cultivated a small orchard in their walled compound.
