History of Feliciana Lodge No. 31 F & A.M.

1.) Chartered as Feliciana Lodge No. 46 by the Grand Lodge of
Kentucky, August 27, 1817
2.) The first worshipful Master was Judge Thomas W. Chinn, S.W.
3.) June 23, 1810 at Egypt Plantation, the Felicianians, many of whom
were Masons, instigated the West Florida Rebellion against Spanish
rule. The Florida Parishes were not a part of the Louisiana Purchase
and after successfully defeating the Spanish; they established their
own government known as the West Florida Republic with the capital
at St. Francisville. The Bonnie Blue flag was adopted as the emblem of
the Republic. The flag is said to be emblematic of the five points of
fellowship on a field of blue representing the blue lodge above.
4.) Granted a Warrant to operate as Feliciana Lodge No. 31, F and
A.M.by the Grand Lodge of Louisiana March 15, 1828 which warrant
continues to this date.
5.) In 1828 Feliciana Lodge 31 F&A.M. laid the cornerstone at the
present Grace Episcopal church.
6.) July 27, 1844 instituted St. James
Masonic Lodge in Baton Rouge.
7.) From 1846 until 1927, the Lodge met at the second floor of the Old
Spanish Market located at the end of Royal Street now referred to as
Audubon Memorial Building.
8.) In June of 1863, Masons from Feliciana Lodge 31 assembled to
extend a Masonic Funeral to Commander, John E. Hart of the Union
Navy, a member of St. George's Lodge No. 6, Schenectady, N.Y. whose
vessel, The Albatross, had been bombarding St. Francisville.
9.) July 1867 Meetings of lodge temporarily suspended because of the
condition of the country during the reconstruction period following
the War for Southern Independence.
10.) The present Masonic Hall, corner of Ferdinand and Prosperity
streets, was completed in 1927 on premises of what had previously
been, in part, a hat store.
11.) Since 1998 Feliciana Lodge 31 has annually re-enacted the
Masonic burial of Commander Hart by Confederate Captain William
W. Leake, played by John R. Rarick P.M...
12.) June 12,2001, during the Day the War Stopped re-enactment, the
Grand Chapter, R.A.M,.dedicated a time capsule on lodge property to
contain artifacts usual to the period and to be opened in June 12,
2063.
