Montrose in Glendale in Los Angeles County, California — The American West (Pacific Coastal)
Montrose Shopping Park Redevelopment
| | Historic Montrose | |
In the 1950s, local retail began to dwindle as consumers flocked to shopping malls. Inspired by a visit to Grand Junction, Colorado to see what had been done to keep its business district afloat, the business owners hired Jack Simison to redesign Honolulu Ave. He took the bold and controversial move of removing street parking spaces and adding landscaped curb extensions to make the street feel less urban and more park-like. The entire project cost $380,000, about half of which was paid by the merchants themselves.
Erected by Montrose Shopping Park Association, Historical Society of the Crescenta Valley, and Boy Scout Troop 317.
