Ringwood in Maroondah, Victoria, Australia — Oceania
WWI Recruitment
| — | WWI Armistice Heritage Walk | — |
Ringwood recruitment levels were generally not an issue as volunteers were numerous. With a population of approximately 1,000 people, everyone knew each other, so there was little chance of eligible men being overlooked. Despite this, recruitment drives were common at the Ringwood Mechanics' Institute.
People weren't the only recruits. Ringwood was a source of good, strong, trained horses and the Army often attended local sales or approached local vendors for quality stock.
The districts of Ringwood, Heathmont, Wantirna and Bayswater North had communities of German immigrants who came to the area in the late 1800s.
All non-British subjects were required to register as aliens in 1916, as a security precaution.
