WWI Peace and Celebrations

The Armistice between the Allies and Germany was signed in Paris on 11 November, 1918 and marked the end of WWI.

In Ringwood the celebrations could be best summed up via this report from the Box Hill Reporter, 15 November 1918:

"The news that the armistice had been signed reached Ringwood at about 8:30pm on Monday, the first intimation being the loud whistling of the engine coming down the Mitcham Hill and the news was quickly disseminated by the railway officials. Within a quarter of an hour, the whole place was thronged and processions of an amusing character were formed in almost every street."
