Hyde Park in Tampa in Hillsborough County, Florida — The American South (South Atlantic)
Historic Doby House
This structure was once the home of Richard Doby, founder of Dobyville and benefactor to its namesake school. Built around 1912, the home was occupied by Doby and his family for several decades. The Dobyville area, in the northern section of the larger Hyde Park neighborhood, was an important African American enclave during most of the 20th century. This modest house is representative of the architectural style and the general size and scale of the homes that once densely populated the neighborhood. That neighborhood included several churches, a public (segregated) school, and a handful of small businesses. Gentrification and large-scale residential projects have changed the landscape of Dobyville, but the remaining homes, like the Doby House, are now protected so future generations can get a sense of the tightknit community that once existed here.
