1. Yukon Facts Marker

Inscription. A.N. Spencer, founder of Yukon, drove his cattle up the Chisholm Trail from Texas several times. Spencer bought land from Mrs. Taylor, Luther Morrison, and Joseph Carson to start Yukon. He persuaded the Choctaw, Oklahoma, and Gulf railroad to change its route to the south side of the North Canadian River and through his town site. The Yukon site was part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. According to Spencer's daughter Mary, the founders got the name Yukon from the big gold rushes just starting in the Yukon area in Canada - maybe thoughts of their own little gold mine?
