Inscription.
The Adam Espenscheid wagon shop was at the south-east corner of Buffalo and East Union Streets, on the second floor of a building whose first floor contained the Andres blacksmith shop. Union Street had been extended from Buffalo Street to Pine Street in 1884, thus forming East Union Street. A heavy plank runway extended from the wagon shop to street level, thus permitting movement of wagons to and from the shop. The site today is occupied by the Learn Building. In the era prior to the arrival of automobiles in the early 1900s, wagon shops and blacksmiths were usually found adjacent to livery stables and hotels and were as common as automobile service stations are today.
