as well as its examples of late 19th- and early 20th-century architecture. Established as the central commercial hub of Hamburg — a town founded in 1812 and village incorporated in 1874 along the historic Buffalo and Chautauqua Turnpike — the district developed primarily between 1820 and the mid-20th century, reflecting periods of economic growth tied to the area's role as a key stop on early transportation routes and later rail lines. Key significant dates include 1820 (early settlement and turnpike influence), 1850 (railroad arrival boosting trade), and 1882 (major commercial expansion). The area's buildings feature architectural styles such as late 19th and 20th Century Revivals and late 19th and Early 20th Century American Movements, including Italianate, Queen Anne, and Colonial Revival elements in commercial and mixed-use structures.
